SURFACEFEATURES
valentin is a handsome young man, and he prides himself in his looks. soft, pale skin and light, blond hair that falls just past his chin: valentin is the kind of beauty only seen by models. the best part? everything is natural, with a little help from some lotion for his face only made in his homeland. he stands at only five feet and eight inches, which really isn't that much; however, he adds about two to three inches to his height by wearing boots with heels. what? he can cheat a little. the only difference between him and the parents he obtained his looks from is his heterochromia. yes, he has differently colored eyes. but, it doesn't look that way in his pictures! well, you see, he naturally has one blue eye and one red eye. in order to conceal this from the world, he wears colored contacts. he only needs one in at a time, and he has two pairs of contacts, one blue and one red, in which only one contact is ever used. sometimes he will have blue eyes while other times he will have red eyes. the only time he doesn't wear the contacts is when he believes he is alone late at night.
now, valentin is used to very expensive, almost old fashioned clothing. going from his homeland to leurrun involved him leaving those clothes behind and wearing the clothing of the "common folk." silk and velvet were replaced with cotton and leather. he doesn't mind much, finding it a little less constricting than the clothing he used to wear. when he heads outside, he wears a hat of some sort (often newsie hats unless the weather calls for something else) in order to conceal even more of his identity. after all, he's a... fugitive.

BACKGROUNDCHECK
FAMILY:
valentin was not born into a regular family in a regular region. no, he was born into royalty, something you don't see much anymore. his homeland is a region found in the sky, but it is unlike the ones you already know of. his region--or shall we say kingdom?--was lifted into the sky over a thousand years ago in an attempt to keep the land safe from warring regions next to them using the powerful pokemon of ancient times. using these ancient pokemon, they were also able to cloak the region in the clouds, making it seem like the dark mass floating overhead was nothing more than a large storm cloud. this ended up both protecting their land and isolating it from the rest of the world.
now, a thousand years ago, not much has really changed in the kingdom. technology is still a hundred years behind, and the ruling family from all those centuries ago still has the throne. all seemed well in the kingdom as queen galya ii gave birth to twins. these two beautiful baby boys were named grisha and valentin, grisha being older than his brother by minutes. because of this, grisha was the crowned prince of umbra. as the two grew up, it was obvious that prince grisha was more fit for the throne brawn-wise. he was athletic, and he was definitely much stronger than his twin brother. valentin, however, preferred to read and focus on his studies. regardless of their contrasting interests, the twins were close. only a few years after their birth, their little brother, kolya, was born. not long after that, their sister fedora v was born.
however, the celebration of fedora's birth was cut short. grisha fell ill with what they assumed was simple food poisoning. he died later that week. valentin took the death hard. he ceased his studies to mourn the loss of his brother, but his father was quick to have him start them up again, along with some extra courses. he was named crowned prince of umbra. his studies intensified, and he soon found himself loathing having to meet his tutors. when he turned ten, he had to start learning how to use a sword. his father took him to political parties (which consisted primarily of the dukes, earls, etc. of the towns of umbra). he was scolded for every little thing that was unbecoming of a king, even though he caught his father breaking these little rules as well. soon enough, he had created a mask that was only shown around his parents and anyone else he had to show 'respect' to.
ironically enough, he found solace in his father's younger brother, afanasy iii. he would often go to his chambers and be read to by the man. he sometimes even taught the boy a few tricks, such as how to get maids to sneak him dessert before dinner. it was even afanasy who got valentin his first pokemon: a feebas. his mother thought it was wonderful that the heir and his uncle were so close, though his father did not like it one bit. when he was thirteen, he was forbidden from spending any time with his uncle. to hide his disappointment, he spent his free time with his feebas (his father insisted on making a meal of it and having his son take on a pokemon of his choosing, but his mother put a stop to that). near his fourteenth birthday, his feebas evolved into a beautiful milotic. his father, still, did not approve. his mother was overjoyed, however, claiming that the milotic was just as pretty as she was in her teenage years.
in the dark of night, when he was around perhaps seventeen, his uncle slipped into his room. tatiana was quick to take a defensive position, but she soon calmed down when she saw it was only afanasy. he woke the sleeping prince, telling him to keep quiet. "we need to get you out of here." he whispered, leaving no room for questioning as he handed the teenager the clothes of a commoner. valentin quickly changed before following his uncle through the secret passages. they were on the other side of the castle walls within minutes. it was then that he decided to question his uncle. "what's happening? where am i supposed to go, uncle?" the man gave a soft smile, patting the boy on the head. "the people are angry with your father, and they're planning a coup d'état. i want you to flee. fly until tatiana cannot take you any farther. i will send word to you when this is all over, my prince." trusting his uncle's words, he climbed on his milotic's back and let her take her wherever the wind carried her.
after a day's worth of flying, they more or less crash-landed on another flying region. both pokemon and master passed out. when they awoke, they were in a foreign home. valentin carefully pushed himself up, flinching as a wet cloth fell from his forehead. "where--" he was cut off. "oh! you're up!" he turned, finding a woman in clothes he had never seen before. she was carrying a tray with a steaming bowl and a glass of water. "good thing, too. i brought dinner." she sat down on a stool beside the bed, spoon feeding the fugitive prince. he did not protest, in too much of a daze to care. the woman cared for him until a month passed. he allowed himself to adjust to the cultural differences of this land--which he learned was named leurrun--before setting out with some clothes the woman bought him. she also gave him a pokeball to use on his milotic since, well, his people did not have the technology for such devices. their pokemon were tamed, not captured.
keeping his identity as a prince hidden in this new land, he started referring to himself by his middle name. his last name was never given until he applied for a job at the region's pokemon research center. it was there that he quickly made another mask to hide himself even further. for about five years, he has worked as a professor's assistant. for five years, he has been worrying about his homeland. are his siblings safe? his mother? honestly, he never found himself worrying about his father. instead, he wondered whether his uncle was safe. what became of his kingdom? these questions remain unanswered.
